vista is a flaming turd

With apologies to Earle, who wrote earlier and really likes Vista, I had to post my second Vista experience.
Keeping in mind that no good deed ever goes unpunished, I got stuck loading Office and vpn software on a coworker’s new Dell computer.  This is the one that Dell wouldn’t let them return for one that […]

more adventures with dell (and vista hell)

The guy who happens to own the company that employs me asked me to take a look at his laptop.  It was not downloading mail and Outlook kept crashing.  He sent mail to Microsoft, who told him he was running an old version of Office and he needed to update.   Thanks, Microsoft, you’ve been a […]

windows reaches out from the grave…

Yeah, yeah, we all know I use linux as a primary OS.
There’s a program called ies4linux which installs a copy of Internet Exploder that runs under WINE, the Windows emulator for linux.  It just works (in the way that Internet Exploder works).   Yes, IE under linux.  I’ve often fantasized about calling Windows Support and […]

once again, microsoft saves the day…

Nearly three weeks after security vendor Symantec released a free tool to clean up PCs crippled by the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) update, Microsoft issued a fix that should reestablish lost Internet and wireless connections.  [networkworld.com]
It’s ok - take your time.   Get it right.   We’ll wait…..

antivirus - a (sort-of) overview from a corporate pov…

One of my favorite Lockergnome blogs, The Blade, has a very interesting post about AVG antivirus:

…making this the third Monday of the week

So after yesterday’s 85 degree debacle, I figured (hoped?) that today would be a bit more peaceful. Yeah, right.
I started by trying to help the SanMan hook things up (see elsewhere). Instead I got hijacked to help find out why a major piece of software wouldn’t work. Mind you, I don’t […]

vista’s so bad no one steals it…

MICROSOFT sued a bunch of resellers for flogging copies of software they didn’t pay it for, the Vole said Tuesday.

None of the resellers were accused of having stolen copies of Windows Vista.
Uproariously funny.

the universe is cackling madly at me right now….

It’s been a rough week the past two days.
After all the normal crap at work, we had to deal with the Virtualization Disappointment (see elsewhere) and the Great Air Conditioning Debacle of 2008 (as opposed to the Great Air Conditioning Debacle of 2007).  We almost fell out the door and poured ourselves into our cars.  […]

MS protests linux on phoenix mars mission…

don’t worry, boys… there’s room for everyone. Linux will run the mission but there’s plenty of space on Mars to stack up all those Vista boxes that won’t ever be sold…

redmond relents…

Believe it or not, Microsoft had Vista wave a white flag yesterday, in the form of allowing XP to ship with PCs until 2010.
