file manager replacements

Every now and then, some site will put up their piece on file manager replacements.  This particular one belongs to Lifehacker.  I’m posting this because Lifehacker is one of my favorite sites of all time.  You’ll always get good information, as well as the privilege of reading the arugments comments.
This article is a call for […]

firefox addons

I’m kind of drawn to Firefox because of all the functionality added by the extensions/addons.  Opera absolutely runs faster but sans addons.
I’m curious as to what other people add to Firefox.  There are quite a few extensions that haven’t been updated for FF3, which is unfortunate, but you can make most work with a few […]

everyday linux apps

I am quite fond of Xubuntu.  I use it on most of my computers.  The reason being that KDE is way too `pretty’ and I’m not too happy with Gnome.  The XFCE desktop gets the job done well and doesn’t use too much in the way of resources.  With the exception of a hiding taskbar […]

linux and 16g usb flash drives…

I just got a 16g flash drive, as the price came into the reasonable range.  The first thing I noticed was that it refused to automount.  I forced the issue with “sudo mount -t vfat …” but it was a real PITA to even copy a file.

The Simple Help blog has a helpful screen-by-screen explanation of how to […]

silly VMware problem

I mentioned that we’re virtualizing our servers at work. We just got done a five day jump-start program and are slowly doing what is necessary to reach our goals (see page above for details on how that went).
Since I run linux as my main OS, lack of a linux Virtual Center client poses a […]

cross-platform inbreeding?

Windows only: Free, open-source application KDE Window-Sizer resizes and moves windows when you click anywhere inside the window while holding the Alt key. To move a window, then, hold Alt and left-click and drag anywhere in the window to move it—this behavior mimics the move behavior available in the KDE Linux desktop environment. Likewise, to […]

ubuntu / VMplayer note

Those of you who have one of the Ubuntus and have had to install VMplayer from source know the pain. You have to make sure you get the latest source plus the patch.
The additional fun, as I discovered recently, comes with each kernel(?) update: VMplayer breaks. It simply won’t run.
The fix, which I […]

virtual appliances

Virtual machines are virtually taking over the world. By itself a virtual machine is just a container that describes various resources such as memory, disk space, processor, and network card, and allocates them from a physical machine. As with a physical machine, it’s the software bits (the operating system and applications) that make a virtual […]
