a thesis fit for a queen?

A year ago we took note when Brian May, guitarist for Queen for the last 30 years, submitted his thesis for a Ph.D. in astrophysics. The news now is that the thesis has been published. You, too, can read all about the population of tiny asteroids and space dust that cause the Zodiacal light. The [...]

joan jett signature guitar (and anecdote)

For some reason that I am obviously incapable of divining, Gibson Guitars has just introduced a Joan Jett signature Melody Maker guitar.
It’s not too difficult to understand the allure of a celebrity endorsement but this one is just baffling.  Let’s face it, kids… the venerable Ms Jett is to guitars what Dick Cheney is to [...]

best buy to start selling musical instruments

Yes, you heard that right - the Place to Get Your Porn Stolen will soon be a Bitchin Place to Get a Guitar.
Stomachs (and eardrums) are already rattling.
Can you imagine the effect of some tone-deaf thirteen year old playing whatever today’s Stairway to Heaven is at airplane decibel levels will have on the poor sucker [...]

popular left-handed guitarists

According to Gibson anyway, here’s a list of popular left-handed guitarists.
Some you’ll know instantly, some you might recognize, some will be a complete mystery.  Quite frankly, I don’t know how a certain dead one made it to the list with the description ’superb guitarist.’  Even his fans will tell you he wasn’t.
Also interesting to note [...]

strat demo days at GC

Since it’s been a while and since I’m a glutton for punishment and since I don’t often get to go into guitar stores with another lefty for pure entertainment, I managed to get by tonight.  I heard all sorts of radio spots and even got a flyer for Guitar Center’s Strat Demo Days.   The apparent [...]

ever play a $60,000 guitar?

I did.
Details to follow.
Suffice it to say that it was a well-worn 1958 left-handed Fender Stratocaster. I may never be the same again.
Stay tuned for the report on the Philly Guitar Show. With left-handed picture goodness.

no led zeppelin in guitar hero or rock band

The band, specifically Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, is not comfortable giving gaming companies access to the group’s master recordings — a necessary step in adding the band to any game.
You tell them, Jimmy!
P.S.  We’ll keep secret that it was ok for the Cadillac commercials though, ok?

ZZ top signs to american recordings

ZZ Top has signed with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings.  Their hope is to get back to their roots (La Grange) instead of their ’80s period (Legs).
I haven’t heard happier news in years.  Starting with the MTV Revolution, the Top went to hell.  They lost their boogie, their soul, their blues.  First with the synth nonsense [...]

where is your led zeppelin?

It was the ’70s when I was in school.  Serious rock was being produced.  Led Zeppelin was arguably the biggest thing going, in spite of various tragedies and spotty output.  School kids could spend years debating the relative merits of the Zep vs Yes, for instance.
And then disco.  Punk.  Grunge.  Thrash.  Et Cetera.
My contemporaries frequently [...]

I’m getting an iPhone!

No I’m not.
I just feel so isolated out here… maybe if I put iphone in the title, I’ll feel more welcome. I’ll fit in better. Then I can start talking up Vista!
Ok, I’ll stop.
Let me think about the top tech acquisitions for the near (and far) future.
Well, some nice soul recently gave me [...]
