file manager replacements

Every now and then, some site will put up their piece on file manager replacements.  This particular one belongs to Lifehacker.  I’m posting this because Lifehacker is one of my favorite sites of all time.  You’ll always get good information, as well as the privilege of reading the arugments comments.
This article is a call for […]

Consider Myself Alerted [Network Monitoring]

I’m really keen on network monitoring.  I have this thing about knowing how things are performing, if everything’s up to spec, and if there are any impending problems that are going to cause way more grief than anyone needs.
If you can picture this, we have four twenty-two inch monitors, set up two by two, as […]

strange proximity-related goings on

Things are weird around me.
Yeah, stop snickering.  It’s because I’m weird…like I haven’t heard that before.  It’s pretty well documented that my mere presence will make things start behaving differently.  Just like your car mechanic’s presence will stop the car from making that noise, my presence makes computers work.
Well, most computers except mine.
The other day […]

more adventures with dell (and vista hell)

The guy who happens to own the company that employs me asked me to take a look at his laptop.  It was not downloading mail and Outlook kept crashing.  He sent mail to Microsoft, who told him he was running an old version of Office and he needed to update.   Thanks, Microsoft, you’ve been a […]

windows reaches out from the grave…

Yeah, yeah, we all know I use linux as a primary OS.
There’s a program called ies4linux which installs a copy of Internet Exploder that runs under WINE, the Windows emulator for linux.  It just works (in the way that Internet Exploder works).   Yes, IE under linux.  I’ve often fantasized about calling Windows Support and […]

virtually a virtual failure

It’s been another week of Mondays these past two days at work.
The people in charge of our Very Expensive Financial App have spent huge amounts of time running around, trying to figure out how to make the app work.
This is in addition to the fact that the only fellow who has a piece of a […]

firefox addons

I’m kind of drawn to Firefox because of all the functionality added by the extensions/addons.  Opera absolutely runs faster but sans addons.
I’m curious as to what other people add to Firefox.  There are quite a few extensions that haven’t been updated for FF3, which is unfortunate, but you can make most work with a few […]

everyday linux apps

I am quite fond of Xubuntu.  I use it on most of my computers.  The reason being that KDE is way too `pretty’ and I’m not too happy with Gnome.  The XFCE desktop gets the job done well and doesn’t use too much in the way of resources.  With the exception of a hiding taskbar […]

curves leaves working computer full of personal info in dumpster

Reader Adam writes in to let us know his relative found a working Dell computer in the dumpster at his office complex. It appeared to be in functional condition, so he took it home. Sure enough, it…
I ask you, is there any hope in the world?  It’s not like this is the first time this […]

linux and 16g usb flash drives…

I just got a 16g flash drive, as the price came into the reasonable range.  The first thing I noticed was that it refused to automount.  I forced the issue with “sudo mount -t vfat …” but it was a real PITA to even copy a file.
The Philly Linux User Group [PLUG] provided the following:
1. […]
