When I was in high school we built a tube amp using 5 12AX7s per channel. Why? Because that was what the school got in bulk.
It sounded pretty good, but we (the all-knowing students) were disappointed because it was not direct coupled, so it could not have frequency response from DC to light!
We all wanted to use some transistors that were in T 03 cases, but those were reserved for the seniors’ projects.
It’s too bad I never kept that amp, it was not bad, and probably much better than I thought at the time.
Now I simply hope to inherit some money from a relative I don’t presently know, so that I can buy some Audio Research tube stuff.

You’d be surprised at what you can build on the cheap. Even lower line tube amps provide an interesting improvement over what’s current (at least to my ears).
There are a few plans for low parts count amps using a 2A3 (IIRC) output. There are also complete kits available (check ebay) if you’re into soldering. Not expensive at all.
That must’ve been some high school…

Well, they specifically mentioned Internet searches. But they never said what the searches where for. I’ll leave it to you to speculate what results might–um–boost certain–um–activity. Brain or otherwise…
