The Nobel Foundation has a political agenda. It’s about avoiding warfare and promoting peace. They use the peace prize to focus world attention on individuals who have either achieved success in promoting peace or on individuals who are in a position to promote peace. Anybody that is looking for something else other than the promotion of their political agenda is naive.
Usually, the people, who are bothered by the people selected for the peace prize, are unhappy because they have a different political agenda than the person chosen. Otherwise, most people have only casual interest in who won the Nobel Peace Prize.
It’s a Swedish thing. If they feel like giving out prizes for peace, they give it out to who they want to. It’s not like the rest of the world gets a vote. All of the people saying how debased the Nobel Peace Prize is because of this year,s selection probably can’t name the last two winners and will change their minds when it is given out to another Mother Theresa. I bet most of them can’t tell you the first name of the man who funded the prize and whose name is borne by the prize.
The criteria is: To the person who “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” As soon as the phrase “shall have done the most” was included in the description, the award became controversial.
The people who believe that it was awarded for some other reason (and there are a host of them: bribe for US favor, race, etc.) need to do something other than study their own navels.

I’d never argue with their right to award a prize to whomever they wanted to, as a private entity. However, temporal displacement doesn’t count. “Shall have done…”
“We disagree that he has done nothing.”
Nice.
