Obama Asks: “Is That A Gun in Your Pocket or Are You Happy to See Me?”
This is not going to be the most popular blog post in the blogosphere today. It’s not going to be the most popular blog post on Lockergnome. In fact, it’s likely to be the most highly disagreed-with blog post on Lockergnome (among the four people who will read it).
I can safely say, however, that it should be the most popular blog post in my house today (assuming the dog reads it and my wife is asleep).
Like most people, I was a bit shocked when I read about people bringing guns to Town Hall meetings. I almost made a comment questioning their sanity. But then I thought about it a little further.
This country is arguably the best country, at least with the freedoms initially accorded to us by our founding fathers; some of the wisest men ever. Unfortunately most of the country is asleep at the wheel (with a cell phone in one hand). This is a very sick society but not many seem to notice.
Does the phrase `bread and circuses’ mean anything to you? Look it up.
Americans Idle and Dancing with the Stars are but two minor symptoms of the larger problem. In spite of the loud snoring sound, our `friends’ in DC decided to start having Town Hall meetings about healthcare. And wouldn’t you know it – people started getting agitated and showing it.
People got so agitated that the Congresscritters had to think of alternate ways to shaft their constituents. One critter insisted on taking only questions written on 3×5 cards before the meeting. Another went to a phone-only conference.
Now let’s get to the guns.
Standard disclaimer: I am not advocating violence or shooting. Or explosions.
Yes, perhaps a few of the people who have shown up with weapons are a bit radical. But the weapons are registered and legal to carry.
The more standard weapon-carriers are certainly firing on all cylinders. Now here comes the good part: I agree with them. I think more people should avail themselves of their Second Amendment rights.
If you feel the need to go off foaming at the mouth about it looking like the Wild West, just stop reading here: you are simply not going to get the point, now or ever. Americans Idle may still be on and I wouldn’t want you to miss any more of it than absolutely necessary. Furthermore, I am not addressing the issue of partisanship allegedly being behind this.
The point of this opinion piece is that the Powers That Be are getting a message. A necessary message. We The People are pissed. We are tired of being tread upon. We are not interested in the sham you call Socialized Medicine. It does not belong in the government arena: it will only get screwed up more. When was the last time the government ran anything well?
Just in case the Powers That Be are still a bit stupid, there are people showing up with weapons. This positively guarantees that they will sit up and take notice. They won’t stop trying to screw us but they will be a bit more careful in the ways they make the attempt.
This is a win-win situation.
The critters have been served notice. This is not about shooting – it is about reminding the critters that government is supposed to be by and for the people.
When Congress and the president are afraid of the voters, we will get (marginally) better government.
Think about it…

AMEN.
And thanks for having the brass to echo what I’ve been saying once these townhall meetings began.

So should the army be taken out of the Government’s hands too? How about the FDA? Why stop there? By your logic, they shouldn’t be running anything since they are so incompetent.

YES! FINALLY, there’s a geek who’s actually a conservative that I can agree with politically!
Keep up the good work, and don’t give up. I’m sure that there’s a silent majority of geeks just waiting to have their voices heard.

You’re probably right about the guns thing. But you’re wrong about health care.
I personally don’t own a gun (maybe one day I will but it’s not really something I spend much time thinking about). As a senior Criminal Justice major I get why guns are important to have in this day and time. It goes back to one of your initial points: the people who bring their guns to town hall meetings will more than likely have permits and such for them and so they’re really not the ones you need to worry about… for the most part.
The ones everyone should worry about are the people who carry guns illegally — and the guns they carry have probably been illegally trafficked as well. They’re the ones who by all rights have “the power” (if you could call it that) to shoot somebody and walk away scott free with no evidence to trace back to them.
That said, you should’ve put a bit more thought into your article. It wasn’t very long — given the subject matter — and in it’s short span you combined two things that really make no sense going together: guns and health care. There is absolutely no correlation between the two.
You stated that the government had no business getting involved in health care because it is incompetent, but someone who commented above me made the interesting point that by that logic the government shouldn’t run the military or FDA either.
No, your article reads to me as a half-concocted scare tactic presenting itself to be something more when it is not (I hope you don’t believe in Death Panels, too). Despite what others may think, it doesn’t take a brave person to jump on that particular bandwagon.
Also, as far as constituents having to find alternate ways to conduct town hall meetings (and for the record not all of them are — just the ones who have to deal with a crowd whose majority watches Fox News), there is a reason for that if you have been paying attention. These people who show up to “be heard” are pretty well doing that and ONLY that — arguing and yelling and screaming and not letting anyone with a different opinion than their own have a say. If those are the kind of people you agree with, then you have my condolences.

I agree with you.
I also believe that this sick society we live in is destined for failure if we continue our glutinous yet ignorant lifestyles.
I believe that the government system has developed into a retarded spoiled child with special privaleges.
We need to look at the bigger picture! Zoom way out and see that there is more to this life than the 2D materialistic programed smoke screen! Wake up people!
I don’t understand why people give into government. The way I see it, there are way more “We the people” than government.
Start a revolution!

An armed populace is call ‘citizens.’ An unarmed populace is called ’subjects.’ If the persons in question had concealed carry permits, and there were no signs indicating that firearms were not allowed in the venue, then those persons have broken no laws. If they’re obeying the law, then there is nothing to say on the issue.
Remember that this is the same administration who had one of their transition team quoted as saying that they were ‘prepared to rule from day one.’
People who have expressed dissenting opinions at Town Hall meetings held by democratic representatives or the president have been referred to as ‘threats.’ If the only thing that it takes to get you labeled as a threat is to disagree with a representative who’s being paid to represent you, then we’re all in trouble.

I HAVE thought about it man. Once again, you are exactly right my friend! I’ve never seen the Idol thing or the dancing thing. “Bread and Circuses” is, as everyone knows, the title of a Star Trek episode, but we’re all PAINFULLY aware of it’s original meaning as well – PAINFULLY! – at least I am. For those most part, the ignorant masses are blissfully oblivious of the real issues that affect their lives, save what they are spoon fed from the powers that be, via the media. I can only pray that more than four people read your rantings, and, perhaps, might have a spark kindled within them to actually question, rather than blindly accept. Keep up the good work man. You are appreciated. It’s somewhat of a comfort knowing that there at least a few others out there (thinkers).

So refreshing to see a young fellow whom has a grasp of the Second Amendment.
In a nut shell;
1. The largest job of the Federal Government to protect our sovereignty. I.E. borders.
2. The States have their State Militias, ie National Guard, to protect your States Rights from the Federal Government.
3. We the People have the ‘inalienable’ right To Keep and Bear Arms to protect our life and property from those whom would do us harm. That includes the FEDERAL and STATE government.
We the People have the ultimate power over government
Also, you the individual are responsible for YOUR safety
No Law Enforcement Agcency can or will guarantee your safety. We will show up after the crime to sort things out, try to find the bad guys, and if necessary clean up the corpses. With luck the corpse and bad guy are the same.

There’s nothing wrong with owning a gun or carrying one. I own one and will carry it when I feel the need. In most instances, a well armed society IS a polite society. It’s not the guns I fear, but people who feel they need to use one simply to make a point in what should be a conversation.
You are also right about the “bread and circuses” aspect of our society, though today it might be more accurately termed “beer and entertainment”. For many, it’s more important to watch television or play video games or surf the web for porn than to really sit up and pay attention to what’s going on around them. They would rather be spoon fed opinions from fear mongers and take them as their own than to use their brains or get their fingers dirty researching the issues before spouting off about them (e.g., “death panels”).
How many people say they can’t afford to feed their families, let alone pay premiums for health care (which is a racket in and of itself…ALL insurance is), but can afford to pay for cable television (where they’re inundated with commercials for which the cable companies are being paid as well, plus that new flat panel television and those cool Bose speakers? Or that new car or truck?
There is definitely something wrong with our society. It’s not the insurance companies, Congress, big business or any number of recipients of finger pointing. It’s US. It’s the “We the People” who are too busy being entertained and wallowing in apathy that we don’t pay attention. Then, when something important comes along, such as health care reform, we rely on fear mongers like Limbaugh or Hannity or some other yakking head to tell us what we should think.
It has been said that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Unfortunately that doesn’t mean vigilance of American Idol or soap operas, or X-Box. It means not only keeping an eye out for Al Qaeda or Chinese spies or local gang-bangers, but those people on the television and in positions of power who try to tell you what you should be thinking, instead of finding out for yourself.

We in Britain suffer from bad politics just as much as you in the States do. We’re all pissed off that they don’t seem to get the people like they should do. But in a liberal democracy, you place your vote and if the party gets in that you don’t agree with, then you have to take it on the chin and campaign peacefully against that government if you so wish. What you can’t do, (even if you don’t agree with what they’re doing) is to threaten violence against them especially if they try and engage you in a debate. That makes us all as bad as all the rotten scum bags like the Taliban who are currently threatening our way of life
