VIRUS/MALWARE KIT
You can’t be a serious geek and not need a serious antivirus, anti-malware toolkit. Go out and buy a usb memory card reader for a few bucks. Then buy an SD card - great deals are all around on small to large ones. Make sure you get a locking one. Put the card in the reader and the reader into a convenient usb slot on your machine. Load it up with your favorite utilities in a folder, plus one for malware and one for antivirus.
Most of the major antivirus vendors offer free software to detect viruses. Download them and put them on the drive. Remember to refresh them weekly or so. Most also offer free online scanning, but we all know that if a pc is infected, we pull it from the network immediately, RIGHT?
The beauty of this homemade utility is that after you copy the programs, you lock the card. Viruses and malware cannot write to it! When it’s time to update the programs, unlock it and put the up to date programs on, then lock it again. You can even set it up to be bootable.
Here are some recommendations that I use on my virus drive - all are free but have commercial versions too [some links US, all in English]:
SPYWARE/MALWARE
Super antispyware and Pro
VIRUS REMOVAL TOOLS
ANTIVIRUS
AVG antivirus
Antivir antivirus
You might also want a text file with all of your important links.
Be safe (and well-equipped) out there!
