Microsoft Shooting Self in Foot with Automatic Weapons

Preston Gralla over at Computerworld mentioned that Microsoft has had the brilliant idea to cripple Windows 7 on netbooks.  It will sell a Windows 7 Starter Addition that is purposely crippled to only allow three applications to run at the same time.

It will be possible to run more apps but the victim…  errrr…..  consumer will have to purchase a different version of Windows 7.

Surprisingly, this is all about money.  No, really.  It has to do with the price that MS gets per unit.  So what Microsoft is going to do is cripple the OS (some would say it was already crippled), opening the door for the completely uncrippled (and free) linux.  As someone who has a pool of loaner netbooks running linux at work, I find this hysterical.

MS still has their foot in the door with XP, provided the netbook doesn’t have larger than a 12″ screen.  Vista is too much of a pig to run on a netbook, although it has reportedly been done.  So in a little while, you will be able to purchase a netbook with Windows 7 preinstalled (and pre-crippled).  In theory you’ll be able to purchase a less crippled version, whether an update or a fresh install.

Bill Gates said that he couldn’t imagine anyone needing more than 640k of RAM.  I suppose Steve Ballmer can’t imagine anyone needing to run more than three applications at once.

Microsoft - the best advertisement for linux ever!

Hello,

Is the average netbook user going to be running more than three applications simultaneously? I can someone running a web browser, instant messaging client and word processor on one, but am not sure what other programs they would need to run as well at the same time.

Good thing I started learning Linux years ago! As far as Microsoft stock holders go? SELL SELL SELL!!!

Wars are not won by a winner; Wars are lost by a loser.

Aryeh: there are so many possibilities that I won’t speculate.

Steve: we linux users keep pushing forward. But MS will never go under. Too many ignorant and stupid people to keep them in greenbacks.

Bill gates never actually said there will never be a need for more then 604 kB, but that is a mistake that is commonly made, so I can understand it

Well looking at it, that’s beyond idiotic… running your anti virus, your firewall and your program to run what ever dongle or what ever to connect to the internet will take… oh wait… 3 programs!!??

There’s no way they will logistically get away with that… the thing would be totally unusable for even running one ‘productive’ program.

Thanks for the comments, folks.
