My wife recommended that I watch a movie called Bobby. It was about many different lives intersecting with the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Normally I avoid my wife’s recommendations (I don’t watch that much tv and can’t sit still for many movies) but I decided to check this one out.
It was directed by Emilio Estevez, who also played a part, along with Martin Sheen, Helen Hunt, Anthony Hopkins, and a ton of others.
I was not old enough to know much about the Kennedys; my only exposure was Ted. What I have seen and read could not prepare me for what I saw today.
Kids today have grown up with the internet so they have no knowledge of what life was like before it. By the same token, I know how horribly evil people can be, but I am not aware of a time when people trusted institutions like the government and didn’t know evil the same way.
The stories of the lives didn’t impact me much but seeing the aftermath of the shooting really hit me hard. I felt the tiniest piece of a nation losing its innocence. All I can say is that must have been one sad moment to be an American.
I only know this time by what I read about it. Cursory explanations and study of the real culprits did nothing to prepare me for the impact upon the country.
Estevez did a hell of a job capturing it - hats off, Emilio.
