Fourth Estate Sale!

Whether you remember or not, today is the 45th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.

A lot of people talk about this sad event by noting where they were at the time they heard the announcement.  I can’t tell you, as I was pre-verbal.  This should also lay to rest any theories about my being involved in the plot.

Rather than go down this path, I wish to note the sad anniversary in another way: discussion of the fourth estate (the press).

In 1963 we had good reporters.  They knew there was a revolving door on the White House, through which came (and went) women of all varieties.  There was a gentleman’s agreement not to report on this.

When Bill Clinton was in office, the best and brightest of the fourth estate only brought us news of the president’s dalliance with one of many unattractive women.

During the Bush regime, the press just printed what the White House told them to.

What the hell happened?

I have wondered about that most of my life. I think part of it is that rather than get more upset about the fact that we are not getting the truth, we simply accept the fact that we don’t get the truth. For some reason, we now care more about tabloid like stories, reality TV and who is in rehab than real news.

I’ll always remember the report on the aftermath of Katrina. Just as I was about to head off to bed, the reader has a shot of a white man ‘finding food’ then the next segment about looting with a shot of a black man ‘looting food’.

I don’t really bother watching the news anymore. It never seems to better me. All I hear are stories about things I can do very little to change.
