Blogging and Free Speech Suit

Three bloggers in New York City are suing the NYPD for not giving them press credentials because they work for online or nontraditional publications.

I find this case very interesting…

  • what are the criteria for giving out press credentials?
  • when can credentials be refused and why?
  • are credentials supposed to be handed out to all?
  • does any of this fall under free speech?

To get “press credentials,” you apply to the agency in question. If they approve of your ideology, and you agree not to dig too deeply for anything so inconvenient to them as the truth, they will issue you government-approved press credentials, which give you the honor of being present when they hand out their latest propaganda to the aforementioned government-approved media outlets.
