wind-up radios banned in zimbabwe

From this month’s issue of Popular Communications:
Authorities in Zimbabwe have banned wind-up receivers, a favorite among non-governmental organizations seeking to promote access to information in rural areas. Their presence has spawned listening clubs accused of tuning in on “illegal” foreign news bulletins broadcast on shortwave. Batteries are almost unavailable in Zaimbabwe. Along with satellite dishes, ownership of a wind-up radio is enough to land villagers in serious trouble.
We tend to take what we have for granted. This is right out in the open and goes to show just one way that information is controlled. When the populace is only fed what the ruling elite want, that is an excellent means of control. You only have to watch mainstream media to understand this.
Why do you think so much noise is being made in official circles about the internet? Sure, they’re ostensibly upset about child p*rn and predators, but they certainly wouldn’t turn down control of the internet. Or control of our little piece of the internet.
Keep them stupid - they’re much easier to control that way.
I now return you to Americans Idle.

Just one word - despicable. Almost as bad as the fiendish Chinese manipulating the internet, eh?

Back in 1992, one of my favorite musicians put out an album… And on the cover of this album was a picture of a chimpanzee watching TV… And on the TV was a picture of a human eye.
At the time I found the picture mildly amusing. But I didn’t really take it seriously, because (as everyone knows) the TV can’t watch YOU…
But times, they are a changin’.
