best buy bites it once again…

A coworker was having some trouble with his Dell computer. He took it to Best Buy. They took one look at it and proclaimed he needed a new motherboard.
He was not convinced and had it looked at elsewhere. Turns out the motherboard was perfectly ok.
It would seem that since Best Buy carries Dell, they won’t hesitate to make themselves a few bucks on parts and labor. This is a nasty form of thuggery, perpetuated on people who don’t know the difference.
Best Buy should be ashamed. They need to stick to what they’re good at: stealing p*rn.
P.S. Even if the computer isn’t under warranty, you can call Dell service and they will help you troubleshoot the problem. You can also get a ton of information on their website, including specifics of your pc, using your service tag number. Fortunately their service website is much better than their sales website (designed by Salvatore Dali, operated by Timothy Leary).

Wow, you really have to be careful. This is the primary reason that I help out my family and friends. With out a trustworthy source to check their system they have the potential of running in to the same situation. It’s also a lot more common than just at Best Buy, unfortunately.

Marcus: I’m sorry to hear it’s so prevalent.
Tell me - how do you balance your desire to help with your free time? Do they ever conflict?
Thanks for the comment.

The desire to help, but not all the time, is the reason I only recommend that friends and family buy from companies with top support and service ratings. I don’t mind replacing a board but I don’t want to creep through creep through the diagnostic protocols of a third tier manufacturer. My sisters both have MacBook Pros and “get” to go to the Apple store at the mall when there’s a question. Win/win.

I balance my desire to help with my free time by charging $25.00 an hour to help. It has given me much more free time and cut down on the freeloading of my knowledge.

lax: that’s the reason I recommend people buy from Dell. Their 24×7x365 service is a real blessing (for ME).
Bliss: nice going! I have to start charging too.
I just have to remember to give a discount to my parents :)
