GMAC Insurance: Drive Less, Pay Less

People who drive fewer than 15,000 miles per year can save 13-54% on their GMAC insurance premiums under a GMAC Insurance’s new Low-Mileage Discount. All you have to do is opt-in to let OnStar…

This sounds like a really interesting way to lower insurance costs.  Until you think about it for a moment.  You have to agree to let OnStar be installed and monitor your driving.

As soon as I saw the first OnStar commercial, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.  I saw it for what it was: a monitoring tool.  It was sold with the compelling pitch that’s way too prevalent these day: It’s for the Children.  “Oh Daddy, won’t you buy it for my safety?”

Think for a moment.  The device has already been used by the NSA for eavesdropping on the owner of a car.  Do you think that was the first and last time it ever happened?  If so, I have a very nice elevated steel structure over some water to sell you.

What Do You Think?
