andy rooney vs rocky

I’m going to plow right in and embarrass myself by saying that I agree with Andy Rooney’s rant today.
Ok, stop laughing - at least until you hear what he was on about.
He was talking about what passes for art in our cities. The monstrosities plopped right into our downtown areas, at great cost, that some refer to as art. He proceeded to show us a few examples. The huge painted ceramic animals took the cake. And I thought PA was the only one afflicted by this menace.
Don’t get me wrong; I know I’m a bit… different. I know a trip to the art museum is only going to frustrate me and make my companion(s) suicidal. I don’t like what most people refer to as art. And I certainly don’t think residents of a city should fork over one red cent for something like this, silly or not.
As a resident of PA, I have seen a paper clip the size of a small building go up as art.
The ultimate example would be a statue, ironically outside the art museum, of Rocky.
Need I say more?

Please. We may not have the best taste in art here in Philly (a giant paper clip, really?), but we did not mistake the rocky statue for some great work of art.
In spike of it’s location, the rocky statue is not about art. It’s about generating revenue.
Have you noticed how many tourists take their picture with that statue on a daily basis?

No, I haven’t seen how many tourists take their picture with the statue. That would require me to be in the physical proximity of it for long periods of time. That would not be a pleasant proposition for me (ymmv, of course).
I guess it’s just another thing I don’t `get’ about pop culture. By the same token, I wouldn’t get my picture taken with a clothespin or worthless pop icon in another city either.
If the statue actually generates revenue, they should hide it somewhere and charge people to get in, then charge them again to have their picture taken with it (by Official Philly Photographers). From your description, we could then disband the Parking Authority :)

I thought they moved the Rocky statue from the Art Museum. I was told it was there because Mr. Stallone payed a nice some to keep it there even after the movie.
I also think we should be able to “opt out” of spending our tax money on art.
