another musical `genius’

Just opened this month’s issue of Guitar Player magazine.
A quote jumped right off the page and bit me. This is from Billy Duffy, of the Cult:
“I don’t get involved with turning knobs,” says Duffy, who lets others construct his tones in the studio. “I’d rather have that third-person view, where I can just listen to what’s going on, and say things like, “No-that’s not right. It needs a bit more body, or a little less treble.”
Wow.
This guy probably has to schedule band rehearsals around his Mensa meetings.
He prefers not to get involved with turning knobs. So he shows up at the studio, presumably with a guitar, and just plugs in wherever he’s told? Can you imagine the hilarity that would ensue when they tell him to plug into the electrical outlet? Come to think of it, that would rank as a great contribution to music….
“Here, Billy… I have this awesome new amp for you to use on this track…”
I hear there’s a huge list of things they’ve plugged Billy into, including one of those cigarette pack amps, an old Crate, the ripping distortion of a JC-120, a car battery, a rhinocerous, and an oven (among other things).
He must be a never-ending barrel of fun for his wife! She recently found out he’ll plug into anything at home too. Well, almost anything, after that visit from the SPCA….
