packed into the newest energy bill that just passed Congress this week, is a ban on the incandescent light bulb.
Incandescent light bulbs will begin to be phased out in 2012, with a complete ban finalized in 2014. Manufacturers will be forced to switch to compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, which can cost more than six times as much as the common incandescent bulb. While CFL bulbs are much more energy efficient, to maintain the bulb’s longevity and achieve maximum efficiency, consumers must adhere to proper operating suggestions made by Congress, such as leaving the bulb turned on for at least 15 minutes.

I don’t know how this is going to work. Maybe some people will be called outlaws for having the old bulbs but where I live, the temperatures get down to -20F to -30F often. The CFB may as well be garbage as they don’t work. I have never had a CFB last more than 1.75 years and the closest recycling center for these is easily 500+ miles. Everyone I know in my town just throws them in the trash so they are not being recycled.
Sending them to the factory for replacement is not worth as the cost of shipping makes it prohibitive.
I have followed every recommendation I can find to baby these bulbs into a longer life but it just doesn’t work. I think they are a waste.

Has anybody else glanced at the hidden warning on the BOTTOM of the box? (I think they print it there on purpose so that people won’t notice that it contains poison and subsequently freak-out).
It states: “Contains Mercury”
Drop one on the floor, or have the dog knock over a lamp and let the kids lick up the Mercury. I guess you have to probably call a HAZMAT Response team if you break one…
