iPhone 3G Woes

I don’t know if anyone else on lockergnome, or anyone who reads lockergnome, has used AT&T’s direct fulfillment to get an iPhone. From what I can tell on AT&T’s forums, they are going in a random order for people who ordered the same phone from the same store. What I mean by that is if you ordered your phone on July 11, and someone else ordered theirs on the 13th, and you both got the 16GB black, how would you feel if theirs shipped and got to the store before yours? Wouldn’t make me a happy customer.
I ordered the 8GB version, and when I got it, they told me it would be 3-5 days. After I payed for it and got it ordered, they told me 5-7 days. I thought that was wierd. I called them the next day, and they told me it would be 7-10 days. I was wondering why their estimate kept getting higher. I called back to see if any direct fulfillment orders had arrived, and they told me only a few from the 11th. I asked if they could give me an estimate (just for kicks) and they told me 10-21 days. I am appalled that AT&T is so unknowing with their own services. They can’t even give you any information on the order status page. They put on there my phone is on backorder, and so is my freight (my shipping is on backorder?). Then I check later, and my phone isn’t on backorder, but freight still is. It keeps flip-flopping. I am getting annoyed, and just want my phone. Pick up the slack AT&T!
Anyone having similar problems?

I went to the local ATT store after 6 p.m. on July 11. They were, of course, sold out. I decided to order. They said 10 days to 2 weeks for fulfillment. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email on July 17 that the phone (16gb/white) had arrived. Went to the store, they activated it quickly and easily and everything went smoothly. I noted that the phone apparently were shipped individually since they had 4 or 5 shipping boxes there each with an individual phone inside.
3G service in my area is more spotty than I expected, however. I would not consider this a major upgrade from the original iphone.

I think that Apple severely underestimated demand. I think that Apple is not shipping enough phones to AT&T (see previous sentence and Apple prefers to ship to their own stores). I think that “direct fulfillment” customers are getting their phones (maybe in 3 days maybe in 2 weeks, but still getting them) and walk-in AT&T customers are getting nothing.
Apple controls the relationship with AT&T on the iPhone. If anyone is to blame, it is Apple. AT&T can only work with what they have, which is no iPhones since the launch weekend.

here’s something for you! AT&T’s 3G networks Sucks very BAD. Nothing compared to the Sprint EVDO Rev-A network. If the IPHONE was on this network THEN it would be a compelling device.
EVDO Rev-A is used by other companies as well… Verizon has it, and I can say, not that fast…. I have used Sprint’s too… not that fast… 3G not that fast…. I’ll just take what I can get.

I ordered my 8GB iPhone 3G on that first Friday around noon, and got it the next Tuesday.

i ordered mine via direct-fulfillment from the local ATT store on 7/15. they said 10-21 days. I have a friend who works for apple..though he could tell me little more than i could find in 3 mins, he did say that the ATT DF orders are completely out of ATT’s hands. Global demand has shorted all but 7 or 8 Apple stores in the US. ATT has NO WAY of finding anything out, it’s miles about their heads…and the folks who “might” actually know…aren’t talking or blogging.
man up and wait for it.

I ordered a black 16 GB on July 17 and can’t get any information on a due date. The web page at cingular.com that’s supposed to give information doesn’t accept any of the information from our receipt. Two days after the rush (Monday after the opening weekend), I went into our local AT&T store and asked about getting a 16 GB iPhone and they rep. said, “We’re out, but we get new shipments every morning. They’re usually gone by 11 AM. DF is the best and fastest way to get it.” I waited a couple of days and went back into the store. The guy said, “We can’t get anymore in stock in stores. They’re fulfilling DF orders first.” I waited until the 17th, then finally just ordered one. Still no word.
