Time Capsule

OK. For those of you who don’t already know. Time Capsule is a great idea. It is basically an AirPort Extreme Base Station with a hard drive in it. It comes in the $300 500GB model, and the $500 1TB model. If you want to know about the 1TB model, I’d ask Chris Pirillo. That is the one he has.
I have the 500GB model, and I can tell you anything you need to know about it.
Personally, I love this thing. It is small, quiet, and has no antennas. I was thinking it would have poor reception without any antennas, but this has better reception than my Linksys. We got a new Linksys, and it seems to get the same amount of reception. The Time Capsule has a USB port on it so you can hook up another hard drive or a printer. Or have a hub and get as many options as possible.
As for setting it up initially. Apple makes it so easy, a caveman can do it. All you do is say whether you want it to be its own network, or just extend the one you already have. I didn’t think it could be so easy, but they managed to do it. If you watch Chris’s video on it, you will see he’s surprised how easy it is too.
It takes an eternity to back up your computer initially. It took me 21 hours to get my 75GBs backed up. I feel sorry for anyone that has like 500GB on an iMac or Mac Pro. It would be going for a few days from what I can tell.
Would I recommend this? Yes.
Which version should I get? Depends. If you dont have a lot of information to back up, or are on a limited budget. The 500GB model is best. What is better, is if you get a new computer like a Mac Pro and have like 750GB to back up, don’t buy a new Time Capsule, just get an external hard drive and plug it in the back. It is expandable in that sense.
If you have a Mac, I would say this is close to a must-have accessory. There is nothing worse than losing all your information just because of a fatal crash. It also connects to PCs running XP or Vista from what I have seen, so you can back up Windows PCs as well. The only problem with this, is that it doesn’t go as easily as on Mac.

Hi Koty,
Nice to hear someone who likes time capsule. I have a new 500GB time capsule. I am not sure if I have backed up everytine yet. Is there an easy way to find out how much (which directories/folders have been backed up)? Is it possible to tell time machine to just back one folder or to drag and drop items into time capsule to back up. When I follow the menus to ‘enter time machine’ I just see my whole computer, all directories etc there. Finding it difficult to see what has been backed up or not and how to back up just some files quickly. The options with time machine seem to be to exclude files from backup rather than specify a file/folder to backup. Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Tom.
