How to upgrade RAM

I know most of you already know how to do this.

I know its a basic process… Turn off computer, pop out old RAM pop in new.

Here is a tip for no one who has done this to their computer before.

Not every computer is 240-pin. The RAM upgrade advisor for NewEgg is not always right. My computer came up as 240-pin on their site, but when I ordered the RAM, it wouldn’t fit at all. I sent it back, they payed for shipping and refunded my money minus 15% restocking and did not refund my initial shipping. So here is my tip for you. Don’t trust those upgrade advisors. They are not always right. Crucial has the best RAM upgrade advisor I have seen so far. My best advice is to open your computer and check for yourself. Unless you know for a fact what type of RAM you have, this is my best suggestion.

Then, once you have the RAM, how to install:

1. Turn off the computer, ground yourself, etc… setup for upgrading you should all know by heart.

2. Find your RAM, it looks like the ram you just bought and have sitting next to you.

3. There are tabs (usually white) on both sides of the ram. Pull these down and the RAM should pop right out.

4. Take this out carefully. Place it aside.

5. For your new RAM, make sure you have it facing the right way, and push it in forcefully.

6. You will know it is in fully when the tabs go up to their original position. It will make a snapping sound. When I did it, it sounded like something broke, but it didn’t.

7. Close your computer up and turn it on. Checking your computer properties should show the extra RAM. If it doesn’t, then you probably did something wrong. Turn off your computer and make sure it is in properly. Take it out and put it back if you need to.

If anyone needs more help, or knows something I forgot, let me know!
