Sometimes the best way to keep people from prying into your personal folders is to keep the folders’ existence secret from the get-go. That’s easy to do with Cleanersoft.com’s Free Hide Folders.
The program lets you make any folder (and its subfolders and other contents) completely invisible with a just a little pointing and clicking. (Note: In Windows Vista, the program may not completely hide some known folders, like Music in the (MY?)Documents folder.) Free Hide Folders is password protected, so you are safe even if the bad guys know you are using the product. It also lets you back up your folders’ hidden states in case you have a system problem. And as the name says, it’s free.[tags] Windows, Privacy, Software, Security [/tags]

[...] Unlike Windows’ Hidden option in an items’ Properties, which doesn’t provide much for real hiding (you can choose to always view hidden files and folders in Folder options, which makes it pretty useless), Free Hide Folders actually makes the folders totally invisible. To view your hidden folders, you need to enter a password then unhide it. If you really want to lock up your data tight, I’d recommend trying out TrueCrypt, but if you want a quick and simple hidden folder solution, this looks like a useful tool. I doubt that Free Hide Folders will deter the FBI or a determined hacker, but I do think it’s likely to keep a casual snoop from learning my bank balance. It’s extremely simple to set up and use. The program’s backup function seems to save the password data, not your files. To be safe, save them somewhere (not on your PC) first. I burned mine to a CD.
