This is going to be a little rant I’m afraid. I can’t believe that HP would hold my printer hostage over a color printer cartridge. The ink was low in my old printer cartridge so I threw it away. Now i can’t go to any of the other functions of the Printer/scanner/faxer/copier that i bought from HP because HP wants me to buy a color cartridge. We all know that HP makes their money off of the cartridges and less on the printer.

It just irks me because there was something that i needed to fax today and now I can’t do it, all because of a stupid printer cartridge.

Oh well, I guess I’ll have to fall in line like a good consumer and buy a printer cartridge tomorrow.

I’ve come across a new app that syncs files. It’s called Allway Sync. I used to be a supporter of synctoy from Microsoft. Synctoy is one of Microsoft’s line of powertoys, or little applets designed for power users. You can check those out at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx. Anyway, Allway Sync allows for syncing files in a number of different ways and if you’ve used a sync program before you’re already familiar with the different ways of doing this. If you’re not leave a comment and I’ll explain it in a different post. Allway Sync will let you sync files to two different destinations. I use it to save my “My Documents” folder to two separate hard drives as I haven’t had the time to setup a raid array for this. You can run Allway Sync from the desktop or allow it to run in the background and make daily, weekly, monthly, etc. backups. Also, Allway Sync can be setup to run when a flash drive or external hard drive is connected to the PC.

Not to mention Allway Sync is free for non-profit users.

There is a flaw in Safari for windows and mac that would allow malicious websites to download files to “the user’s Desktop (Windows), or Downloads directory (Apple).” This flaw would allow the files to be downloaded without any prompting from the Safari browser

“Apple does not feel this is a issue they want to tackle at this time,” says Nitesh Dhanjani who warned Apple Inc and Microsoft about the flaw. While Apple doesn’t seem to be taking this flaw seriously Microsoft is taking it seriously.

The irony is that sometimes keeping your software up to date makes no difference if the publisher of the software doesn’t care to fix a flaw in their own software.

I’m finding myself spending more and more money on college textbooks. In my school the professors pick the textbook but they do so at the last minute. The books that are needed for class are available the day of class and there isn’t an easy way to find out what books are needed until the last minute. Here are the things that I am doing to save a little money on textbooks.

1. Call the bookstore or get in touch with the person that does the ordering and see if they will tell you what books your professor ordered. The sooner you find out what books you need the quicker you can go out and find them cheaper.

2. Try and get the books used. Used books are generally a lot cheaper than a brand new one. Also if your lucky the key points will already be underlined or highlighted for you from the class before. Used books can be bought from Amazon.com or from a local textbook seller. I know that across the street from my college there is a store that sells used books so I always try and get the book from them first. There is probably something similar near your college.

3. Sell your old books. You may be able to sell your used books back to the college bookstore or put up a flyer at your school advertising you used books for sale.

4. Rent your books from some of the textbook rental websites on the Internet. Chegg.com is one such textbook rental website.

5. Check the college library for the books you need. Your college may hold a few copies of textbooks for whatever reason. The key is to be able to be one of the first to know what books you need and be one of the first to check those books out.

Be careful when renting or selling your old books because some books make a good reference manual for later use. It depends on your chosen area of study what books you should keep but just be aware that some books should be kept.

Does anyone have any other ways that they save money on college textbooks? Please leave a comment.

Ever wonder where the hard drive space is going. Well it could be that collection of uncompressed Abba .wav files. The truth is I think everyone has a little corner of thier harddrive or flash drive that’s being loaded with data they don’t need. For example I have a 2GB thumb drive that is half full. Until i tried SequoiaView on it I didn’t know what was filling it up. It seemed that i had some uncompressed symphony recordings on the drive that were buried inside a few directories.

SequoiaView is a freeware app that lets you view your data storage device as a block. This block has other blocks inside of it and the sizes of the blocks represent the relative sizes of your files. If you had a 100GB hard drive with two files in it that were 50GB a piece. SequoiaView would show two boxes (each at 50% of the area of the main box) representing the 100GB drive. Anyway it is an interesting tool if you are finding that you need more space on a drive or trying to clean out a harddrive or pen drive.

Give SequoiaView a try on your own system. Windows only though, sorry Mac.

While I was browsing the net I ran across a site called Earth Class Mail.com. They offer a service that will allow you to get your snail mail online. Basically what happens is you have your mail sent to them and they scan the letters as they come in. Then when you want to read a piece of mail they open it and scan it and then you can read it. You can also choose to shred important mail or recycle mail that you’ve read. They offer a 30-day free trial so that you can test it out. It would be great for people that are always on the road and not necessarily at a place long enough to get have their mail sent to any one place. Anyway it just might be something someone out there is looking for.

I was having problems with one of my computers. I thought that it might be a problem with some used RAM that i purchased. Dealing with all of the different testing methods is what prompted me to write this little guide. It is by no means exhaustive and some processes aren’t for the beginner. It is assumed that you know enough to replace your own RAM and burn boot-able CDs. If your having problems such as random system restarts or general system instability you may need to check your systems RAM for errors.

Check to see whether or not your RAM is being recognized correctly. Right-click My Computer then select Properties. The first window that pops up should be already set to the General tab. This screen will allow you to see how much RAM is being seen by Windows. If this number is incorrect the memory modules may have become unseated. To correct this you should open up your computer case locate the RAM, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface or by using an ESD wrist strap, and then take the RAM modules out and reinstall them.

If that doesn’t work the next step is to download some software to test your computer’s RAM. Download and burn memtest86+ to a CD. Reboot your computer with the CD in your CD drive and it will boot to the memtest86+ program. Let the software run for at least one complete pass. The time it takes for the process to complete will depend on how much RAM you have in your system. It is important to test the RAM for as long as possible because some problems only appear during certain conditions (ie heat or possibly specific operations)

Memtest86+ is based on memtest86 so you may want to try that if there are any problems with memtest86+.

Microsoft Corp. also has a product that is freeware for testing the RAM in a computer system (Windows Memory Diagnostic). If you are having problems with the other pieces of software or just want to get a second or third opinion you should check that program out.

When testing your RAM you may want to take out all of the RAM modules and test each pair (as in dual channel memory) or possibly even one module module at a time. RAM that is working will not have any errors. If any of the RAM modules produce errors then they need to be replaced.

Tips for writing school or college papers

keep sentences simple

Keeping your sentences simple will make them more understandable and will make it easier to avoid grammatical errors.

Don’t plagiarize

Plagiarizing carries serious consequences. In some schools you can automatically fail the class or be expelled from school altogether. There are many websites on the Internet that will help you figure out how to cite you sources. Many English textbooks have a chapter or two that focus on citing all of the different types of sources. If your using Word 2007 it has a built in sources manager that I’ve used successfully on my papers. The main thing is that if the words or ideas didn’t come from your own brain you need to cite them.

learn how to cite your sources

Citing sources is an important skill to learn because it will help you avoid plagiarizing.

always read through your final product

Writing a perfect paper the first time is almost impossible. It is important to read over your paper a few times before turning it in. In order to be sure that it’s ready for handing it in try: reading it out loud or having other people read it and see what they come up with.

start writing

No matter what your writing assignment is it’s not going to write itself. What you need to do is just start writing. Before you know it you will have to edit you paper down. Also, when writing your paper say what you want to say and then end it. The person grading your paper has probably seen all kinds of ways that people try to plump up their papers. Avoid using a lot of filler or gimmicks (i.e. large fonts, odd margins, etc.) in your paper to get it to the required page length or word length.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
