A little over a year ago, I found out about Yahoo! Answers, the latest in a series of Web 2.0 applications from the Big 3 search engines. I believe it’s part of my job to evaluate and understand the potential of emerging technology and tools on behalf of my search engine marketing clients. In that spirit, I signed up for an account and started asking & answering questions. While I enjoyed the thrill of being voted “Best Answer” by those posing the question, I eventually became board with it. Fast forward a few months and think online networking professionals community meets Yahoo! Answers and you should come up with LinkedIn Answers. For the past few months, whenever I have time, I review recent questions on both Yahoo! and LinkedIn Answers to see if I can offer up any insights or resources. On Yahoo! Answers, 23% of the time I’m actually adding value, according to those voting me “Best Answer.” Now I’m focusing my efforts on LinkedIn, not just because it’s a professional community vs. young consumer audience, but because the competition is fierce and the responses are always insightful. I’ve garnered more value from LinkedIn Answers interactions that general networking through LinkedIn Connections. Maybe that’s just me, but now I’m hooked and I can’t stop fighting for the power, prestige and glory that one generates from having all the Best Answers.

Another great site with a young consumer audience is FunAdvice. I’d say the average user is younger than on other sites, but it leaves you feeling satisfied that you were able to help them.
