Seth Godin & No Business Model

Earlier today I was reaching out to a variety of potential speakers for SEMpdx SearchFest 2008 and the most amazing thing happened. I fired off emails to top tier experts like Matt Cutts, John Battelle, Guy Kawasaki and Seth Godin, not expecting to hear back from any of them (kudos to Matt Cutts for responding in a timely and helpful manner). The big surprise was a note from Seth Godin, whom I ended up talking to on the phone for quite some time. It was like a dream come true, as I’ve been a faithful member of the Church of Godin for many years, and only earlier this year had the pleasure of seeing him speak in person at an industry event. Being able to talk with my marketing idol was a treat indeed.
Although it doesn’t look like he will be speaking at SearchFest 08, we did discuss other opportunities to collaborate, which led to me discussing my professionals networking group & email job list, pdxMindShare. Within an hour or two, I received emails from friends congratulating me for being mentioned on Seth Godin’s blog for having ‘no business model’ for MindShare (and that not being a bad thing). What initially began as a hail mary attempt to rope in a SearchFest keynote speaker became the thrill of my career. And I thought chatting briefly with Malcolm Gladwell at CMO Summit in Las Vegas earlier this year was a big deal…Small is the New Big indeed!
