Mount Hood Pizza Celebrates Anniversary of Larry Walters Lawn Chair Flight Into Space

A random collection of Portland natives gathered at Mount Hood Pizza on July 2nd at 7 p.m. to watch owner Craig Davisson launch a mannequin version of world famous Larry Walters, notorious for his 1982 lawn chair flight to 16,000 feet. While the real Larry later committed suicide, our dummy hopefully made it safely to a location somewhere beyond the city limits, perhaps into Southwest Washington or Eastern Oregon. The rest of us enjoyed hot pizza and cold beverages at the neighborhood hot spot. View pictures of the Larry Walters commemorative balloon launch.  Unfortunately for Mt. Hood Pizza and it’s guests that day, the event was overshadowed by Kent Couch, a Bend resident that repeated the balloon & lawn chair feat only a week later, gaining national recognition.
