A Day in the Life of Kat

So many of you ask how I manage to do the things I do. I’ve tried to answer it before, but to be completely honest… I just don’t know. I do it all because I have to.
First and foremost, I am a Mom. I have a home to take care of and clean/maintain, laundry to do, meals to cook, errands to run, and kids to chauffeur. I also try to spend as much time with my daughters and granddaughter as possible, which isn’t always an easy task.
Second in line would be my volunteer work. That may not sound feasible to some of you, as it doesn’t pay the bills. However, the personal rewards I reap are limitless. I am an Administrator for GeeksToGo, WhatTheTech, and also moderate on a few other sites. Unfortunately, I don’t get to spend much time at any of them other than GeeksToGo. The work I’ve been able to do there over the past four years has been amazing. Helping and teaching others with and about their computers is something I never thought I would be able to do. Knowing that someone may have a better experience now because of my help, is awesome.
Also along with the volunteer work, would be the hours I spend chatting on WyldRyde. I have a private chat channel there, with most of my close online friends around me. I am also a Network Op, and do my best to help maintain the Network. I am also in charge of Chris’ channel, with awesome help from an excellent mod group. It can be very hectic at times, and even frustrating… but it’s also a lot of fun.
Of course, nothing in life is free. I have work to do! Bills to pay! Kids to feed! I work for Chris as his video assistant. For every video he records, I have a process to follow:
- Download the videos
- Re-encode them from .flv format to .mp4
- Upload the videos one by one to TubeMogul
- While it uploads, I watch the video and take notes
- When the upload finishes, I click a button which shoots the video to several other sites, including YouTube
- While I’m waiting for it to shoot to the other sites, I do the write-up for the blog, complete with more information, links, etc.
- Once the video has been submitted and accepted everywhere, I log into Blip.tv and get the direct download link to put in the write-up
- I then log into YouTube, claim the video, edit the tags and title, and get the YouTube link
- The YouTube link is pasted into the blog write-up (embedded in code), and then the blog post is created
And yes, that’s for each and every video!
I also do some freelance writing for Thunder-IT Inc.. That is the parent company for several subsidiaries. Currently, I am working on re-writing all of the content for every page on all of their offshoot sites. It’s a lot of work and slow going, but I sincerely love it. The owner is a great person, and fun to work with. I also love the opportunity to be more creative than I normally get to be when writing for Chris.
Oh! I almost forgot! I’m also a sister, aunt and daughter! I’ve written before about my Dad’s medical problems. He will be having the rest of his leg removed in a few weeks. When that happens, I will be packing up and heading down there to stay for several days, to help out after he comes home. I’ll still work from there, while he’s sleeping.
So you see? I have no idea how I do it all. I just do. It’s my life… it’s crazy at times… it’s sad and frustrating at times… but happy most of the time. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Kat, I’ve always wondered how you do all that you do. It is amazing how you do everything that you have to do and still do a good job with it. Thanks for the insight. We’re all thankful for all that you do.
