I have to admit that I hesitated to see this film. Only because I had reservations to making a sequel to what has become a true cult classic. Not to mention that the first film takes place in virtually one location and was mostly dialog driven, with an extremely low budget and fine acting.
For some reason, these kinds of movies appeal to me much more than over the top - big Hollywood blockbusters. The clever, witty, deep rooted, thought provoking & self searching films… kind of like The Breakfast Club… complex in it’s simplicity.
Now, having seen Clerks II for the first time, I can say that I enjoyed this film a great deal, and will no doubt watch it again.
Kevin Smith once again does a terrific job writing the dialog for random, yet meaningful conversations between the characters. Only Smith can make even the most obscene, senseless conversation, somehow make sense and have merit.
Randall and Dante continue to berate and challenge each other’s sense of loyalty as their battle of wits rages on in a continuance of the first film… be it 13 years later. Even the new characters seem like old friends as you are able to warm up to them quickly, and make for some great laughs. As does Jay, who is quite hysterical this go-round and helps bring even more comic relief, just when you think there is no more to be had.
Finally, the point that is driven home throughout the film really makes one think. Believe it or not, there is a rather strong message to be received. And if your a fan of nostalgia (as I am) - you won’t be left feeling hollow with this film. Enjoy!
