Compare: Windows 7 Editions
Today, October 22, 2009, Windows 7 has been released. Many are very excited for the much anticipated launch. But with this release brings about some decisions… which edition is best for you?
With Windows 7, three separate editions are offered: Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. Microsoft thankfully decided to tip off Home Basic, well because simply, it just made the whole matter more confusing for the consumer.
The features that Ultimate has that the other two editions lacks are BitLocker and the language pack, which has 35 different ones. Personally I believe that should be in ALL editions. Would make sense, right?
Professional and Ultimate have a few features that of course Premium does not offer. Those include connecting to company networks easily, an option to back up to a home or business network, and having the ability to run Windows XP programs in Windows 7.
Windows Premium offers everything that Vista Premium edition offered, which seems to me, the best option. I am running Vista Premium (64-bit) and all of the features are great. Can’t say it lacks any that at times I wish I had, although the ability in Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions to run XP programs would be pretty nice. That, too, I think should be in every edition.
So what about you, the consumer? Are you going to purchase Windows 7? If you are, what edition are you going to purchase?

I got the full retail version of Win 7 Pro a couple of days ago and installed it straightaway. Installation was straightforward and instructions were clear. My pack came with 64 and 32 bit options. Having a well endowed 65 bit machine I opted for the 64 bit version. Tried it and found it lacklustre compared to the 32 bit RC version I had been running. I have all versions (legally) of MS OS both 32 & 64 going back to DOS 3.3. I find XP Pro 64 faster than 7×64. So as the RC version ran well I will try that next and let you know.

PS the first computer I used was in 1963 and bigger than the average house.

To be clear, Starter and Home Basic editions are available, but not generally to the public. OEM Win7 Netbooks will likely have Home Basic loaded on them, as the resource requirements are much lower.
Also, Ultimate will only be offered promotionally and through OEMs after a certain point. It’s only available through retailers now for a short time.

Already got my copy on order xD Getting the 32 bit edition of Premium. Can’t wait for it to arrive haha. Pity about the XP thing, but I’m sure somebody will put something together sooner rather than later…

Windows 7 Ultimate definitely is the best as thats what Microsoft gave me for free. I like the free windows xp mode also.
