From bottle cap collecting to unsolved mysteries The People’s Almanac #3 offers a wide variety of strange, unusual and rather gray synopisis of what might be considered truth. The third edition, 1981, has, you might have already guessed, series of mysterious write-ups on celebrities like Bruce Lee (Was he Murdered?); Marilyn Monroe (Was she Murdered?); Jack Ruby with a similiar investigation is covered. An interesting chapter is Dollars and Sense. This chapter includes: The Vanderbilts, The Rothschilds; William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) and their eccentric lifestyle and glamourous fortunes. Jackie O\’ and her eccentric spending habits with JFK and Ari (Onnasis) is highlighted.
There are no lmits. On average Jackie’s spending habits approached by one estimate $300.00 a minute.
What would ecentricity be without well-known misers? The Perfect Miser: Daniel Dancer (1716-1794) who epitomized the word: cheap, to The Witch of Wall Street: Hetty Green (1835-1916) are just examples of wealth gone wrong. After reading the morning paper, Hetty would retrieve her son; she would send him downtown to resell it. Her clothes were usually worn and she epitomized the word meager. From hermits to hypocrites, The People’s Almanac never ceases to surprise.
I received an e-mail from one of the people outlined in the 1981 edition of The People’s Almanac, Danny Ginsburg.
From The Almanac:
Collector: Danny Ginsburg, Rancho Palos Verdes, California
The only criterion for Danny Ginsburg’s collection is that each bottle cap must have grooved edges — no twist tops allowed.
Ginsburg estimates that his collection numbers around 250,000, but it is growing at almost 3,000 a month. He has caps from over 35 countries and 800 cities on every continent except Africa and Antarctica.
One of the more unusual caps he has seen includes both a saccharin health warning and a ‘Kosher for Passover’ label written in Hebrew.
A recent e-mail I received from Danny states that he has now over 5.5 million bottle caps in his collection.
The People’s Almanac #3 is out-of-print. A paperback edition can usually be found on E-Bay. Prices vary widely.
