Two Tips: PC Lock and Tabbed Browsing

Lock Up the PC using the Microsoft Key

Most newer keyboards should be equipped with the Microsoft Key. This little key with the Windows logo on it should be standard on every keyboard. However, some laptops have that key in a different location than a standard keyboard perhaps in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard rather than the lower left of a standard keyboard. Whether you are at home or work this shortcut beats the three key combo [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL] to lock your system.

Use the Microsoft Key + (L) on keyboard.

Before leaving your desk this simple key combination will quickly and easily lock a Windows XP system.

Tabbed Browsing

For this tip I’m using Firefox 3.0. Here are two ways to browse more seamlessly and effectively and enhance your browsing experience.

While surfing the web for work or play, clicking [File] + [New Tab] immediately opens up a new blank page.  Repeating this step requires opening up a new page separately. How boring.

Using the [Ctrl]+ [T] on your keyboard will speed up the process. This is also an effective keyboard combination to open up a new tab.

A more effective and time saving method for browsing uses the [Ctrl] key.

While in a web page, whether it be news or on Geeks you’ll find many URLs. Suppose you have five links and you need to open them quickly. Let’s suppose you quickly need to get a phone number of a company or an address. Once again the [Ctrl] key will be very effective.

For every link in a page you want to open use your mouse. Here’s how it works.

As you float your mouse over the link, first press and hold the [Ctrl] key  than left click the link with your mouse.  A new tab will open and your new page will load automatically. Repeat the step as many times as you need.
