Technology’s Impact on Global Warming

When it comes to technology, the rule of thumb seems to be the smaller the better. As people begin to completely phase out large, box-like televisions and replace them with the flat screen version we are starting to see some problems arise. It seems that these new flat screen televisions are made with a gas that has an effect on global warming that is worse than carbon dioxide.
A greenhouse gas called nitrogen trifluoride, used to make the TVs, is 17,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide, said Michael Prather, director of the environment institute at the University of California, Irvine.
Prather’s research shows production of the gas, which remains in the atmosphere for 550 years, is “exploding”.
It is expected to double by next year, from the current 4,000 tons produced annually.

It seems that we are damned if we pick technology and we are damned if we do not. We try to make smaller devices, but end up destroying the Earth even more than we are now. I do not see a solution to fixing global warming, because no one is going to want to change how they live their lives. There are some small things that everyone can do to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they are putting into the air, however if you buy a flat screen tv; all the hard work at carbon dioxide reduction is wasted.
I just bought a flat screen tv too….
What do you think, can we stop global warming?

Justin

The interesting thing about this one is we’ve done it to ourselves, as this compound occurs nowhere in anture - a specific process is needed to produce it.
I don’t think your argument, though valid, is entirely correct. The amount of carbon dioxide saved, through efficiency, over the life of the LCD versus a CRT, makes up, many times over, for the amount of nitrogen trifluoride that MIGHT escape into the atmosphere.
Since the chemical must be formed, the amount in total must pale in comparison to carbon dioxide pollution.
The first thing that everyone can do, though it sounds silly, and is certainly not new, is plant a tree - we have a lot to make up for - both here on this continent and the South American continent. (The Amazon rain forest loss is something that won’t be recovered easily)

The rain forest loss is astonishing. I think it comes down to the area of a football field being destroyed every second (based on how much is destroyed over an entire year).
Thanks for the comment =)

You can not change Global Warming, so get over it!

Global Warming is beneficial to rain forests as it increases the acreage available for the development of rain forest. Right now the biggest threat to the rain forest comes from those trying to fight Global Warming. They are tearing down the rain forest to grow crops for biofuels.
BTW, how many know that for teh last ten years we have been going through a Global Cooling trend?? Who knows what will happen next.
