Anti-Troop or Anti-War

I was doing some blog surfing today, and found a blog post that was talking about how anti-war citizens are starting to turn their attention to our troops:

Recently, there have been local incidents in which military personnel have been verbally assaulted while commuting on the Metro. Uniformed members have been approached by individuals expressing themselves as anti-government, shouting anti-war sentiments, and using racial slurs against minorities.

Whether or not you support the war, there is one thing you should be doing, and that is supporting our troops. The two things are very separate. By going to a solider who has spent years over seas protecting our homeland and telling them ‘thank you’ — you are not saying that you support the war. You are only thanking someone for doing their job to keep us safe.

Anyone who insults a solider or ‘attacks’ them is someone who disgusts me. Is this how you want to treat people who are over seas protecting us so that you can live a life of freedom? If you are against the war, then great, be against the war. There is no need for you to take out your anger on the troops who are only doing what they are told. A lot of troops are against the war as well, but they are following orders — because they want our country to be safe.

I would never approach a soldier back from Iraq and say a single word about being kept safe by their service - it just is not so - but also it is not their fault - they are performing a duty which is commendable.

I was a child during the Vietnam war, and I remember seeing the things that were said back then - which is actually much different, as most of those troops were there because of conscription - they had no choice.

I agree: disagreeing with soldiers is pointless, in my opinion. They go where they’re told. Actively bothering them is juvenile. If you’re anti-war or anti-policy, direct your energy where it belongs: the people or bodies that put them there.

I have to disagree with your statement about soldiers fighting for our rights and keeping us safe. There was a time when they were doing an honorable thing but now it’s just unquestioning patriotism. Our people in Iraq are not fighting for our rights or freedoms at this moment (again, my opinion). They would appear to be fighting for the rights of multinational corporations to `assist’ the Iraqis in selling their oil (the contracts were drawn up a while back ).

If we were doing such a great job, maybe Iraq would go some way towards reimbursing us for the money, time, and lives. Maybe reasonably-priced oil as a suggestion.

People who stay in their own country and keep alert.. that’s the way to protect your country.. not establish military settlements in other countries…
