Do you want a boy or a girl?

A lot of couples hope for a certain sex while trying to get pregnant. Often people say that they wish they could actually pick. That futuristic science may be closer that you think.

Now, doctors at Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine are conducting a “sex selection” study that will allow couples to make that wish come true — letting them actually pick their baby’s gender.

The study took nine years to get approval; and the test subjects have to fill out forms declaring why they want a boy over a girl (or vice versa). Scientists want to see people’s reasoning behind the decision before releasing the procedure to the public.

But one recent survey conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago found 59 percent of women would not use sex selection even if it were free.

“I would never opt for this procedure,” one woman told ABC News. “I think it’s [childbirth] one of the world’s greatest surprises.”

What happens if the procedure became available for everyone; and the majority of the world decides to have a boy instead of a girl? I think the process could potentially cause a lot of controversy and problems throughout the world. If the process becomes non random, the ratio of males to females will differ and having an abundance of either could cause problems. Too many females could lead to over population and too little females could cause an under population.

I want to hear your opinions. Would you opt in for this selection process? Would you pick a boy or a girl? Is taking the random out of random mating a problem for society? What will be the implications down the line?

Comments welcome,

Justin

They should keep everyone normal, it’s the way of life.

The dog and the cat are male.
Think I’ll stick with quadrupeds and make the world a better place.

There is already folklore on how to try for a certain sex but I’m not sure it’s more than folklore.

I think while this is interesting, the bigger bio-first will be when reproductivity can be controlled… turned on/off via pill.

What Do You Think?
