The Road to a Medical Doctorate

People often ask me why I am following the path that I am on with my education.  As you probably guessed by the title of this post; I am on the path to become a doctor with a Medical Doctorate.  While I know in my mind that this is something that I want to do, it is very difficult to explain to someone who randomly asks the question.  Mostly because they expect a short answer; no one really wants to hear my twenty minute speech on why I want to become a doctor.

Tonight I watched a show on ABC that I have been waiting to watch for a few months now.  Hopkins is a documentary that follows around doctors and residents at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  After seeing the first episode I noticed how much the doctors care; they want to see their patients get better.  They sacrifice their lives, be it sleep, family or other aspects, to ensure that the patient is looked after to the best of their ability.

I know that not every doctor is like this, it is very sad but yet true at the same time.  So this is my answer to the famous ‘why’ question; I want to be that doctor.  I want to be the doctor that cares about my patients, I not only want to help them get better but I want to see them recover.  I know that it is impossible to save everyone; medical science is not that advanced, but science does its best to try.  I am not in this for the money or the fame, believe you me that the road ahead is full of sacrifice and pain.  However, the end result is definately worth it.

People tell me that once I finish Organic Chemistry (which I just did), that things go downhill.  While to some extent that is true, the real test is now just beginning.  I havent even done the hard part yet; I still need to get into a medical school.  The road ahead of me is long and steep, however, I am up for the challenege.  I will tell you right now; nothing is going to stand in my way of this dream.

Who knows, maybe one day I will have the privledge of being your doctor.  Anything is possible Gnomies,

Remember, it’s not where you go to med school that matters…. it’s where you do your residency….
Good luck in your quest..

‘They sacrifice their lives, be it sleep, family or other aspects…’

OR??? No no no, you sacrifice your ENTIRE life for the seven (+) years of med school and residency. Becoming a doctor means giving up most of your 20s.

At least you’re not in it for the money, because anyone who can get board certified could make more money in another field for less hours.

is it really worth all that time, money, et al to have some high school graduates and greedy lawyers tell you how to practice medicine? welcome to the real world and join AAPS for a dose of reality. eeb MD ‘59
