Snooping IT Workers?

Have you ever sent a computer in for repair and wondered about how secure your data is?  Could your papers for school end up on websites that sell them for a profit?  Could your music be copied and passed out to others?  It seems that not only does this happen on a personal level but also on a corporate level.

“When it comes down to it, IT has essentially enabled snooping to happen. It’s easy — all you need is access to the right passwords or privileged accounts and you’re privy to everything that’s going on within your company,” said Mark Fullbrook, U.K. director of Cyber-Ark.

Be very cautious about the information that you pass onto other people.  I have seen an employee at BestBuy snooping through a users picture while they were ‘repairing’ a PC.  In most cases, if you have to send a computer in for repair you should backup your data and do a clean install on your system.  This ensures that your data stays with you.  You cannot always trust those who claim to be professional.

Good advice.

The fault lies on both sides though. In today’s world, you’d have to be pretty silly to send data anywhere in the open, whether for repair or on a flash drive.

Safest bet is to assume it will be looked at, if not stolen. Act accordingly.
