The Stray Who Deserves a Chance

A five or six year old stray cat recently came into my life — and instead of letting him suffer on the street I decided to try and take care of him. It started with a trip to the vet this morning, where I found out that this cat, Dexter, tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). While similar to the human form, HIV — FIV has no treatment what-so-ever. While the cat is expected to live for many years — he is already showing symptoms of the disease.

Dexter is missing a few teeth, and has some issues eating food. He weighs eight pounds and is really bony. I am doing everything I can to get him into a no-kill cat rescue shelter. However, they are all full right now. I am pulling strings with everyone I know, in hope that someone will be able to take him in.

He is probably the sweetest cat that I have ever seen. He does nothing but sit around and purr.

My plan is to make a donation to the rescue shelter that takes him in, as they are all non-profit and work on donations only. We are trying to get him into either Casa de los Gatos or HOPE Animal Shelter in Tucson, Arizona.

My daughter dragged in a new cat, who is also nothing but skin and bones. This one is not FIV positive, and seems to be healthy, she was just flea-bitten and ear-mite ridden. The ear mites were so bad, she’s got cauliflower ear. I got her treated for fleas, so she’s now growing hair back around her neck and at the base of her tail. She’s also a sweety. All she does is sleep on my bed, and eat when she wants to. We have a cat door, so she can outside whenever she wants and get right back in. And she knows how to use it.

We also have one cat that has FIV. He’s doing well enough. You’d never know he had it. He’s fat, about 12 pounds (down from when he decided to balloon to about 15!), but still active, hunting his favorite food. Squirrels. One our our other cats was bringing in toys for our youngest kitten. She was bringing in baby squirrels. He came in right after her, found the baby, grabbed it, and went back outside for his snack.

We’ve had brown and green anoles brought in, usually found later dead, we had a skink (rescued live), a couple of frogs (rescued live), birds (usually rescued live), mice (rescued live, or halfway living). There’s probably been a few bugs as well (palmetto bugs they are called, they’re actually a large cockroach) that probably got dragged in as well.

[...] few weeks ago I posted a blog about a stray cat, Dexter, that I took in.  Dexter is FIV+ and for the last few weeks I have been trying to get him into one [...]
