“CATONSVILLE, Md. — Baltimore County police have identified a Catonsville man fatally shot by an officer after he used pepper spray on another officer and charged at both of them with a machete.Around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, two officers responded to a report that 25-year-old Jason William Leary was violently beating his wife at his home in the 6100 block of Edmonson Avenue in Catonsville.Police say Leary met the officers at the front door and sprayed one officer, then he ran at the officers on the porch with a machete raised toward them. The second officer fired several shots, hitting Leary at least once.” (Link)
What I do not understand is why the officer who shot his gun is on administrative leave. It might be a police policy. However, in the case the officers saved a life. Not only did they save the wife, but they saved themselves. One of the police officers was maced by the suspect. The suspect then ran at the officers with a machete — that is a definite threat to the safety of the officers.
These two officers are heroes in my book.

As they are, in mine. I know that with all the police brutality and charges of unnecessary “force”, police departments have to protect themselves against lawsuits more than ever. The officer may very well be on leave pending an “official” investigation, to cover their butts. I sincerely hope that’s all it is.
