NASA Budget Cuts for Education?

“Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s education policy is causing a stir … but not all in a good way. Advocates for space exploration are noting with dismay that he’d take billions of dollars from NASA to pay for the educational programs he’d like to expand.

The shift from exploration to education came last week when Obama talked up his $18 billion education plan during a New Hampshire campaign swing. Actually, the reference to NASA comes at the end of a 15-page document laying out the details behind the plan.

“The early education plan will be paid for by delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years, using purchase cards and the negotiating power of the government to reduce costs of standardized procurement, auctioning surplus federal property, and reducing the erroneous payments identified by the Government Accountability Office, and closing the CEO pay deductibility loophole. …”"(Link)

I cannot think of a more stupid plan. Exploring space is a form of education. By exploring space we are able to learn so much more about our universe. One day, we will have to leave Earth, and if we don’t know where to go we will be out of luck.

I understand the need to fund education, however there are other places we can make budget cuts. Raise taxes on cigarettes or or cut money from military research and development. NASA is already under the microscope, however our society needs NASA more than we think. By cutting funding from NASA for five years, we are implying that math and science are not important. And Obama wants to fund education? If this bill goes through, he is taking away from education.

The end of the article ends on the best possible point:

If anything, the focus of the Constellation Program should be shifted to a more ambitious goal of Martian exploration, Zubrin said. (What else would you expect?)

“That would send a message to every young person, saying ‘learn your math and science, and you can be part of this important new challenge,’” he said.

I agree! Cut the budget for NASA? Okay, so you want kids to learn about math and science but not have any inspiration or future in those fields? Teach a man about science, but don’t employ him to actually explore it or make a career out of it. There’s a problem there that is just so obvious and a lack of intelligent thinking on the matter scares me…

You can’t make kids learn by spending more money anyways. It has become a cultural issue with kids not wanting to learn because computer games and gangs are more interesting. How about we inspire our youth by trying to establish a living colony on another planet (Mars)? If we start having multiple colonies on different planets, the technologies and economies that would develop would inspire millions, nay, billions around the world to learn and endeavor onto higher education institutions. I assure you, inspirational advancements in technology will do more to further mankind than putting more money into the inherently flawed school system - the system is broken to begin with, so lets just put more money into it? Stupid philosophy. Last time I checked, the Space Race and the mission to go to the moon was what inspired millions of Americans to enter the sciences and learn, and it gave the country a direction and ambition… an edge over other nations for leading the way to the future for mankind. Boy, have we gone astray.

The technologies required for space travel and exploration, and the technologies developed by NASA can be used on Earth to better mankind. In terms of sustainable farming, water uses and energy production, the science NASA is furthering can be used to help raise the standard of living for many on Earth. Does he not want Africa to prosper? What about the rest of the third world? What about the poor in America? Does he honestly think legislation and taxes are going to fix all those problems? C’mon, anyone with an inkling of economic knowledge knows that increased efficiencies created by new technologies are what has allowed us to improve the standard of living for ordinary people around the world. So, he’d cut it so that more teachers can tell their students to turn to page 54 of the textbook and read, or to buy a newer computer because the three year old computer sometimes crashes? Is that why American students lag behind students in the rest of the world? C’mon.

Obama’s “cut NASA and put it into education” is stupid. I have less respect for the man knowing that he lacks the intelligence to realize that improving the standard of living for those on Earth will require new technologies, not more taxes from the rich to give stuff to the poor. Let’s build a sustainable planet and inspire kids to learn. He’s thinking too small, and yet so many think he is the future…

As if we aren’t falling behind the rest of the world as it is! Now lets go ahead and cut Technological programs so we do become real laggards in terms of technological developments. While we are at it, why don’t we expedite the outsourcing process and urge corporations and the rich to move to Barbados and the Cayman Islands (or anywhere but here) to avoid being heavily taxed (yes, let’s increase the taxes to help the poor, that always worked in the past…LOL). That will do wonders for the economy - at least those of us remaining in America will be on an equal footing in a much more communist/socialist “utopia” where there are no rich. I mean, who wants to get rich anyways? LOL. I used to think the reason America was great is BECAUSE people could be born poor and become rich through hard work. Now we want to tax the rich even more, when they already pay the bulk of the taxes in this country to begin with.

From Obama’s position on NASA to the idealistic utopia that liberals and socialists like Obama dream of, he has so many holes in his politically correct views. His goals and ambitions are good - his way of doing them are stupid and flawed. Social and racial justice will come about over time - but electing a President due to his race is real lame and counter-productive. Elect the right human for the job, PERIOD. I’m not saying he is the worst or best candidate, but at least know what each candidate plans on doing. Many of his supporters don’t know how he has voted in the past… he has only voted 96.4% of the time the same as the rest of his party.. change? Ha, status quo. If people want change check out Ron Paul. I’m afraid the entire election will be about whether a woman or an African gets becomes President first, instead about their actual opinions and what is best for the nation based on what each candidate would do. While America is still busy healing old wounds, the rest of the world will forge ahead without her on the technological front. If only Oprah would run for President we could get this over in eight years instead of dragging this issue out over the next 16 years (if each candidate was to win for two terms)… then from then on, we could just elect whomever is best… or not, since we would then have to elect an Asian, Native and a Latino… Then maybe this itch to heal wounds and prove its a liberal society would no longer matter as much as just voting for the best human for the job.

What Do You Think?
