“BALTIMORE — A freight train carrying potentially hazardous materials derailed Saturday near the center of this city, knocking at least 12 tanker cars off the tracks and overturning about five, the fire department said. There were no reports of injuries and no sign of a spill or leakage, authorities said. A hazardous materials crew was called to determine whether there was any danger.” (Link)
The derailment occurred near where the NFL’s Raven’s play their home games. The HazMat team that responded to the situation said that the train was carrying potentially hazardous materials, but they did not comment on what the materials were.
If there were any real danger, I am sure the HazMat teams would have released more information. I consider potentially hazardous materials as “hazardous, but nothing was spilled”. It seems like a potentially bad situation was avoided. Baltimore is a hub city, and a hazardous material disaster could do some damage to not only the people, but the economy of the city as well.
