Text Messaging, the Car and You

Text messaging is becoming the new standard for communications.  Instead of making a phone call people send a quick message to get the information that they need.  Texting is a great technological advancement, however is is causing a lot of controversy in the states.  People (mostly teenagers) text message while driving.  This changes their focus from the road to their phone.  This change in focus has been the cause of many motor vehicle accidents, and possibly even deaths.

Many states are starting to ban  text messaging while driving, and they will be ticketing drivers for “texting while driving”.  While this seems like a good idea, it seems that it would be very difficult to enforce.  First of all, there is no real way to prove that the person was sending a text message.  For all the officer knows, the person could have been looking at the time or making a call.

Some states ban talking on the phone while driving, however they allow texting while driving.  Other states ban the opposite, while even more states do not ban either.   There needs to be a national standard set, so everyone knows what they can and cannot do.

I agree that texting while driving is a dangerous thing, however I am not sure that the current “ban” in some states is useful.  In fact it will jut make drivers send their text messages more secretly, so police officers cannot see their phones.   Only if there was a bluetooth alternative for text messaging.

Voice-activated texting is the answer and teh technology is here (though on higher-end phones/PDAs I grant you.

I find it inconceivable that anyone should even think of texting while driving. Even talking on the phone with a handsfree set while driving is more dangerous than being over the alcohol limit. Research in the USA, the UK and Australia has shown that using a mobile phone while driving is very, very dangerous and can lead to your own death as well as the death of others. I’m shocked that people can text while driving, and hope I never visit a state that has a law that allows it.

Here in the UK, it’s illegal to use a ‘hand-operated’ mobile phone for any reason, unless the car is parked and with the handbrake on.

Although it’s difficult for the Police to enforce, they automatically check the phone records when a driver is involved in a serious accident. If the records show that the phone was being used, the accident is automatically assumed to be their fault and the driver incurs the appropriate penalties (fines, points on driving licence etc.)

I still shout at idiot drivers who blatantly drive with a phone held to their ear, when I see them though ;-)

I believe that people that try to make laws that stop me from enjoying that freedom of being an American, have way to much time on there hands. If your out in the todays world trying to make a living and support your family, then A) you don’t have time to debate or get involved in supporting your opinions either for or against laws, And B) If you don’t have a cell phone, you can kiss your family and friends good-bye because you’ll never see or talk to them because your always working.

I leave for work @ 2:15am and get home at 5:30pm Mon-Fri, I eat dinner and if I don’t fall asleep in my plate I’m in bed sleeping by 6:30pm. Sat. I sleep in, spend the rest of my weekend with my wife and kids. Friends, I’ve lost a lot of them do to my hours, close family I hardly ever see.

If it wasn’t for my cell phone I would be completely shut off from my life out side of work. My cell phone keeps me up to date with what’s going on at home, with the kids, their schools, doctors, and lets not forget my boss who is only able to talk to me on the phone because we never see each other at the office.

Cell phones are a god send especially to when it come to calling home. Those people that can’t do two things at once should pull over to us their phones, and a hand-free phone is a deffinate safety device. Talking to someone on the phone is no different than talking to someone sitting next to you. Having loud/screaming kids in the back seat of the car is more of a distraction than talking on the phone, Should thier be a law that states…duct tape needs to be in place before putting your kid in the car and remain their until they exit the car? As for as text msg’ing, your driving, your eyes need to be on the road, unless you can do it with out taking your eyes off the road… smartin up, we arrest drunks for driving because they can’t tell which yellow and white line to follow or because thier eyes are closed and not on the road.

I have a cell phone and I will use it to call home or work no matter what law says I can’t, until the day comes that I can’t do two things at once.
:)
If I didn’t have Thanksgiving off I wouldn’t have had time to voice this.
So there’s my two cent, you can do what you want with it.

Eric

Thanks for the comments Eric. Always good to hear other’s opinions =)

Freedom includes the freedom to do stupid things–such as texting while driving.

I’m sorry, Eric, that you have to work so much. I’m sorry that you don’t have much time for your family. But that’s not the issue here. Get a clue…it’s not all about YOU! To quote: “I have a cell phone and I will use it to call home or work no matter what law says…” suggests you don’t care about the other people on the road. I care about my family, too. I don’t want my kids to be without their dad because someone like you chose to be selfish with how he uses the phone, “no matter what the law says”.

What Do You Think?
