Are You Doing Your Part to Save Our Planet? Wal-Mart is.

“The report released Thursday details dozens of sustainability programs ranging from environmental to economic development, employee health care and ethics in overseas factories where it buys goods….Those goals are to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste and to sell products that help sustain resources and the environment. Scott did not set any timelines, although there are deadlines for some of the steps along the way.” (Link)

It is always nice to see that companies are doing their part to keep our planet clean. Sadly, I am not so sure that one company can make such a huge difference. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying it’s not worth it. However, I am a little worried that we are focusing on one company. Instead, the EPA should be setting goals that every company should follow. There are other companies world wide that are doing a lot more damage. Out of all of the changes that Wal-Mart made, I think that the energy saving freezers are probably the biggest advancement. This is something that every company could easily switch to.

However, the organic cotton in clothing could cause more of a problem for Wal-Mart users. Wal-Mart is known for their great deals and well price clothing. However, whenever you put the word “organic” into a product, the price takes a climb. I wonder if Wal-Mart customers will buy the new organic clothing.

Now that Wal-Mart is becoming more green, maybe they can work better to keep their stores a little more clean. The local Wal-Marts in Tucson are very dirty. The floors are caked with dirt and the the store itself is pure chaos. However, the staff is usually very helpful.

I’ve never heard if in-organic cotton since most cotton is grown in the
ground as a crop it would naturally be organic, unless someone used
chemicals on it during the growing process, even then, the final product
is a cotton boll and picked by machine, unless someone wants to pay a
migrant worker to bloody their fingers to pick it the original hard way.
