Mission to an Asteroid

“(PopSci.com) — Here we are, nearly eight years into the 21st century, and the most spectacular manned mission NASA can pull off is a trip to the International Space Station, a mere 210 miles above the Earth. ” (Link)

It looks like the movie Armageddon is closer to reality than we may think.  However, we do not have three months to solve the problem.  In 2036, the asteroid could hit Earth dead on.  However, NASA is working on a solution.  NASA says such a mission is possible with technology being developed today.  As I write this, NASA is probably looking at several asteroids through an unmanned probe.

This mission would be different, because real lives would be at stake.  Two or three astronauts would spend months in route to the asteroid.  Once they reach the asteroid, the lack of gravity could be an issue.

According to NASA, there is only one issue that will prevent them from completing this mission: their budget.

George Bush won’t be in office (I hope) by then, and even so the Democrats seem to have found the guts to stare him down, having handed him his first overridden veto yesterday.

Perhaps we may get back to the moon in my lifetime, and even Mars. It’s time for some more of those commercials concerning how many inventions and improvements have their beginnings in the exploration of space, so that Joe Average will get the reason we need to have a thriving space program.
