“Until a few years ago, kids got just one kind of diabetes, type I, an autoimmune disease in which the body doesn’t produce enough insulin.
More recently, the obesity epidemic has led some children to develop type II, which previously only adults got: The body makes insulin but the cells aren’t sensitive enough to it, so blood sugar rises.” (Link)
Diabetes is nothing new, however it is becoming more frequent. Now that type II diabetes is showing up in children, something has to be done. For the most part, Type II diabetes is preventable. With a healthy diet and exercise it can be prevented or even cured.
There was a study done, that took a group of people with diabetes and had them eat only raw food for thirty days. When I say raw foods, I mean uncooked vegetables, grains and so forth. After the thirty days, the type two diabetes was gone in most, if not all of the people involved in the test.
If you have children, try and avoid junk food. A good indicator of junk food is the presence of high fructose corn syrup or partially hydrogenated soy bean oil. While a little junk food will not hurt, try to turn to vegetables or fruits as an alternative snack. This is another example where portion control is very important.
