Toys Recalled - Date Rape Drugs

“WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Chinese-made toys have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful date rape drug when ingested. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

With only seven weeks until Christmas, the recall is yet another blow to the toy industry — already bruised by a slew of recalls this past summer….In the United States, the toy goes by the name Aqua Dots, a highly popular holiday toy distributed by Toronto-based Spin Master Toys. They are called Bindeez in Australia, where they were named toy of the year at an industry function earlier this year.” (Link)

So far, two children from the US have swallowed one or more beads (which are part of the toy), and gone into non-responsive comas. This is a serious problem. If you know anyone who has these toys for the kids, please pass on the word. Get rid of these toys before they do more damage.

Companies are rushing to produce as many products as they can for the holiday season; however something like this really should have been caught before the toys were shipped around the world. This is a horrible mistake that will be causing problems for years to come. The law suits will come later. For now, the main concern is the recall.

We are going to start actively looking for American-made toys (and they are still out there) because the chinese obviously care little for children on both sides of the ocean so to speak.

Ridiculous! When is this country going to do something BIG to them? I’m afraid our great country has simply gone too soft and is unwilling to feel a little “pain” as it were by boycotting ALL TOYS FROM CHINA and that included all the electronics out there. Yes, it would be difficult but until they feel it in the wallet this will continue on & on & on. Why wouldn’t it…no one is really being held accountable for any of this and government action is so freakin’ slow to react (much less be proactive on the issue) it shouldn’t surprise anyone more garbage is being uncovered.

Makes you wonder if the stuff made in Taiwan or some of these other Asian countries has the same problems but simply hasn’t been found yet?

I think what must be looked at is the parenting of these children who became affected. The term ‘age appropriate’ comes to mind. Just as a prudent person would not give an 8 year old a shotgun and ammunition, a prudent parent doesn’t give toys not designed to be chewed on to children that will chew and swallow inappropriate stuff.
