Vista, I Rather Enjoy You

Yesterday someone posted their dislike for Vista. I thought that I would offer a counter argument for why I like Vista. I am not trying to start an argument or anything, I just want to show that there are two sides to every story.

I first got Vista one week before it went live. I got a free copy of Vista Business from Microsoft’s power together campaign. I probably would not have bought Vista, because it’s expensive, and I am a college student. However, I like free things. I am not saying that I have had no problems with Vista, however I had problems with XP as well. Problems and computers go together like a rock sinking in a lake, it is unavoidable. Here are my reasons for liking Vista.

  1. It looks pretty darn cool
  2. Yes, it steals my RAM and graphics card memory, but I have plenty to spare
  3. Things work great with UAC turned off, and turning it off it rather easy
  4. Windows Defender does not work, so I installed a good anti-spyware. I wouldn’t trust Microsoft to remove spyware anyways.
  5. My BSOD rating is about as common as I got BSODs in XP, about two a year.
  6. It’s backwards compatible with software for previous versions of XP. Sometimes it takes some tinkering
  7. My friends oooo and ahh over the nifty graphics

Okay, I admit it, Vista is a glorified version of Windows XP. However, it is getting better, and eventually the bugs will be worked out. It took awhile for XP to be up and running as well. I have no reason to switch back to Windows XP, at least none that have convinced me to do so yet.

Thanks to Lockergnome user Snakeyes22, who posted an article on 10/22 called “Vista, I Hate You!“, your article gave me the idea for todays a write up. =)

I really enjoy being Mister Negative. Each of my statements here correspond to your statement number. I hope I don’t offend you, I’m just giving my view on this.

1. Linux and Apple both look pretty cool. Want XP to look cool? Use WindowsBlind/DesktopX

2. Linux hardly uses any RAM, and just because you have a lot of RAM doesn’t mean other people have the same amount of RAM.

3. UAC is supposed to help users. How is it going to help if it’s disabled?

4. If Microsoft is going to ship out an Anti-Spyware program on my computer; I expect it to be good.

5. BSOD varies from person to person. I won’t comment on this.

6. Not everyone likes tinkering with software because they risk damaging their computer. Plus, there are other out there who don’t know how to tinker.

7. Beryl/Compiz for Linux. Enough said.

Note: I think that #1&7 seem like the same thing, so that makes up for my lack of comments for #5. (Yes. I’m quite lazy)

I just wanted to ask. If you didn’t receive your version of Windows Vista for free, would you go out and buy it (if you had the money of course)?

If i had the money, yes I would have bought Vista. No question about that. In response to UAC, it is supposed to help the user. However, I think it is more aimed at the basic user. For the more advanced computer users (those who know not to delete a file in the windows folder), it is quite safe to turn off.

I’ve just had to deal with a network connectivity issue with a Vista laptop.

I went nuts trying to figure out where to go to modify the settings that I wanted to modify. And the Fix Network prompts where enough to make me go batsh???. All in all, it was another FAIL in working with WPA.

I really need to sit down with a computer (2000 Pro doesn’t support it, and I’m not about to try XP on this ancient Dell) and play with it enough to figure out where I’m failing. It has to be me. It’s been out there too long, although I can’t understand it when I know I’ve got the same password in the router and in the laptop and they still won’t talk to each other. It can’t be that hard!

I recent decided to start my own campaign for the virtues of Vista, NOT!

To say something like “it (Vista) is getting better, and eventually the bugs will be worked out.” misses the point. My expectation is not to buy something (except maybe for wine) and be told, just wait a year, it will be just as good as what you were previously using.

Come on! The point is when Vista was released it should have been at least as good, if better then XP is currently! Not a just as good a year from now.

Personally, I think Vista is just as good (if not better) than XP.

What Do You Think?
