Every day the University of Arizona publishes a newspaper called the Daily Wildcat. The paper is published by students, and usually it is a great read. Today is no exception. With the normal paper, they also published a Guide to Parents Weekend, for students. Every year, around this time, we invite parents to come onto campus and see what everything is about. Today, all large lectures are open, and students can bring their parents to class (sadly, my parents went out of town so they could not attend Organic Chemistry with me).
Here are a few excerpts from a few articles, with some hints on how students can prepare for the weekend.
“As Family Weekend approaches and students scramble to hide the beer bottles in their recycling bins and learn where the library is, two worlds are about to collide: your first family, and your family at school.” (On Family Weekend, Two World Collide)
“Rethink Wall Decorations
For this weekend, you might want to try replacing that Marley poster with a periodic table of elements. Not a chemistry major? Try the poster with the two kittens hanging onto a telephone wire with a cheeky caption that says “Hang in there!” Your mom would find that hilarious.
Pre-Screen a Campus Tour
Find out the locations of all the buildings you should be spending more time in and take your parents to see them. Hit up the Main Library.
Avoid the UA Mall around noon so mom doesn’t get hit in the head with an errant Frisbee or shouted at by religious fanatics. This is the University of Arizona, not Woodstock.” (Stash the Bong and Find Your Classrooms)
