“Verizon Communications says it has provided federal, state and local law enforcement agencies tens of thousands of communication and business records relating to customers based on emergency requests without a court order or administrative subpoena.” (Link)
If you read the article, it goes on to say how the information released has been used to catch child predators and other criminals. While it is great that Verizon is helping out the law enforcement agencies, however I am unsure if the way they are doing it is good. If a law enforcement requests information, without a warrant or a subpoena, could there be consequences down the line? Would the evidence hold up in court? As a customer of Verizon, I wonder if there is something in my contract that says they can give out my information to anyone who asks for it.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for catching criminals, however if evidence is being obtained in a way that could get a person off the hook down the line, then there is a problem. Law enforcement agencies should be more careful, and go through the proper channels to ensure that the chain of evidence is not disrupted or disturbed.
