Aw, Nuts

The FDA is going to force raw almond growers in the US, Mexico and Canada to pasteurize their harvest. This means that they (the farmers) will have to ship, by truck, almonds to a plant, get them pasteurized and then back. Gee, this won’t add any additional cost will it?

The fear is salmonella. There were isolated outbreaks from raw almonds a few years back. Can someone tell me the odds of dying from salmonella vs riding in an automobile? I am not minimizing those who have died from salmonella poisoning, but it seems like knee-jerk reaction is to take organic produce to non-organic. Squeaky wheel gets the oil I guess.

Hi Chris,

A similar article related that in the past 5 years there were two incidences of salmonella poisoning in raw almonds . Let’s see, in the same time period approximately 450,000 Americans died of complications from prescription drugs.Oh yeh, gotta heat the almonds, can’t be too careful!

Let’s see….I eat at least one pound of raw almods per week as my primary snack food. (I’m a Fatblaster listmember). That puts the total at over 50 pounds per year; with the following “consequences”:

Total cholesterol = 179
Fasting Glucose = 93
Typical BP readings = 12x over 8x.

The Point: LEAVE THE ALMONDS ALONE! The benefits far exceed the risk.

Yeah this totally sucks, it it outrageous and ridiculous. But such is politics. Years ago raw milk was done in. Many cheeses like you can get in Europe are illegal to import, and forget making it in USA. Eggs are still raw and how many people get salmonella from that?

Raw food is seen by many to be healthy, so why can’t we have it?

People refuse to understand the concept of risk [see for example ], so they go along with all sorts of outrageous harms and unneeded expenses so they might imagine they are “safe.” Why the manufacturers cannot just say “this food is raw — not pasteurized — so there is a very small chance of some problem for certain people — see your doctor for advice.” Eh, the worrywarts would not buy it!

Yup, let’s destroy all the amazing benefits of almonds& turn them into ‘dead’ food. No more enzymes,vitamins&minerals here,folks.

This is because almonds are a better cancer fighter than any drug on the market. We can’t have that now can we? Something natural to fight cancer versus something patented that generates tons of revenue for the FDA and big pharma? No way. Guess what pasturization does? Yep, kills all the good stuff that helps fight it off. The FDA even went as far as banning apricot seeds from sale in the US several years ago for the same reason. It’s all about B17, a big cancer fighter. The FDA has sold it’s soul to the devil and the devil is Big Pharma.

We now get to suffer for it. Hey, did you hear that China, kiled it’s head of the FDA equivilent because he took bribes. Obviously there is no fear of that here. Too bad.
