Expressive Writing

Do you keep a journal? According to James W. Pennebaker, PhD, recording your thoughts, feelings and actions in a journal can help you cope with a serious injury, illness or traumatic event. It seems that putting your thoughts down on paper makes you think about your circumstance, allowing you to better cope. This in turn reduces stress and enhances other cognitive effects on physical health.

People talk with others about their situations and it is often beneficial for the talker. If you don’t have anyone to talk to or the situation does not allow for it, get a notepad out and write away!

Here are some points to remember:  Plan to write for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, Write however you feel most comfortable (pen and paper or computer), Write whatever comes to mind, Keep your writing private, and Plan to get rid of what you write (this will allow you to be more honest).
